Cold Storage flagship reopens

After nearly two years of renovations, Singapore’s oldest supermarket chain, Cold Storage, has reopened its flagship store at The Centrepoint in Orchard Road.

As well as offering more ready-to-eat food items, the supermarket now has a dine-in area.
The chain’s Takashimaya store has also reopened after a four-month revamp, offering a wider selection of Japanese products.

With 43 supermarkets in Singapore, Cold Storage was formed in 1903 by a group of Australian and European merchants to provide cold storage and distribution of frozen meats and fresh foods. It opened its first retail store in Orchard Road in 1905, where Orchard Point is now, before moving next door to Centrepoint Shopping Centre in 1983. Now owned by Frasers Centrepoint, the mall was developed by the Cold Storage Group.

CEO Victor Chia says the supermarket chain’s Centrepoint outlet holds memories for shoppers and employees.

“Our very first store was in the next building – that’s why coming back to where we started is important.”
