Singapore retail sales flat in July

Singapore retail sales in July rose a meagre 0.2 per cent after excluding sales of motor vehicles from the data.

Including cars, they fell by 2.6 per cent, reflecting a down month for the motor industry, where sales slumped by 15 per cent.

Month-on-month, seasonally adjusted retail sales rose 1.1 per cent against June, again excluding cars.

Statistics Singapore estimated the total value of retail sales in July at S$3.7 billion, of which e-commerce accounted for 4.4 per cent.

By category, sales of computer and telecommunications equipment fell 6 per cent, partly due to lower sales of computers. The optical goods and books, food retailers, department stores and supermarkets and hypermarkets categories recorded declines in sales of between 3 per cent and 6 per cent.

Sales of furniture and household equipment rose 2.8 per cent and of medical goods and toiletries by 2.6 per cent.

Restaurants, food caterers and other eating places (such as cafes) registered small declines in turnover of between 0.6 per cent and 1.1 per cent in year on year.

But sales of fast-food outlets rose 3.1 per cent.
